Tips for Choosing the Right Swimsuits for Your High School Swim Team

As a coach or team manager, you may already know what colors and custom logos you want to appear on your swim team’s suits and what your budget is. And you probably have a good idea about fabric and design, but if you’re looking for a bit more guidance on buying team swimsuits, here are some additional important considerations for you.

Swim Fins

Comfort and Fit

Suits worn to the beach or the local pool aren’t going to meet the daily demands of swim team practice. Most teams practice twice a day, so it’s essential to choose comfortable swimsuits with seams and stitching that lay flat against the body. This will help reduce possible chafing that occurs from repetitive movements. Chafing near the armpit area from material rubbing against the skin is the worst.

Arm, leg, neck, and back holes or openings should not impair a swimmer’s range of motion. As coaches or team managers, when you set up an online account with a reputable swimming brand, you not only receive team discounts, you get to talk to experts who can help guide your swimsuit choices and all your gear selections, including swim fins.

Material and Durability

In addition to a great-fitting suit, you’ll want to choose fabric that’s durable and stretchy, but not too stretchy. It can be a bit tricky because chlorine breaks down fabric and suits become too stretched out over time. They are then reduced to the “drag” pile, only to be worn when swimmers need extra resistance during practice.

Polyester or a polyester-Lycra blend is the gold standard because polyester is resistant to chlorine and can hold its shape and color better than other materials. Nylon and nylon/Lycra blends are super comfortable and fit well too. Nylon is advantageous because it’s lightweight and soft but it is not resistant to chlorine, which means the suit isn’t as durable.

Training Suits

Your swim team may offer at least one team-issue training suit and one competition suit per season. Each team is different. Training suits are the swimsuits your kids will be wearing daily, sometimes twice a day if they don’t have back-up suits to wear. Ideally, everyone needs a few practice suits to rotate through. Brands like Kiefer Swim Shops, TYR, Speedo, and others offer all types of training suits constructed of polyester, nylon, and Lycra blends. Durability and comfort will be an important consideration in your training/practice suits.

Competition Suits

Competition or racing suits are designed to make swimmers feel light and streamlined through the water. They fit a bit snugger and are made of compression material designed to reduce drag. The brands listed above are the same ones that offer high-quality racing suits. The competition suits will only be worn at swim meets, so they may not need to be quite as durable because they aren’t getting worn as much. But they should be comfortable and high-performing, so your swimmers get fast vibes and a boost of confidence wearing them on meet days.
